KVM står för Keyboard, Video och Mouse (tangentbord, monitor och mus. Termen KVM myntades i slutet av åttiotalet för att beskriva den teknologi som då höll på att växa fram, och som innebär att en enda användarplats bestående av endast tangentbord, monitor och mus kan styra mer än en dator.KVM-switchar har genomgått en enorm utveckling det senaste tio åren, men det ursprungliga konceptet är detsamma - att minska den utrustning som behövs för att kontrollera och styra flera datorer. De vanligaste KVM-switcharna tillåter en användare att kontrollera två eller flera datorer med hjälp av tangentbord, monitor och mus.
KVM Switches are divided into categories according to:

- multi-platform compatibility (supports Sun, Mac & PC; PS/2, USB & AT)
